Blocks

Life is made up of blocks. Like Tetris. Blocks that fit together just fine, blocks that obstruct the progress of other blocks, blocks to stand on, blocks of all different colours, shapes and sizes.

My dry friend, always knowing how to judge an audience, today handed me a diet book.

"Dude, My BMI is 21, I ain't needin' no diet book!"

Is not what I said.

The book promises to make me 13 lbs lighter in 2 weeks - potentially making my BMI plummet (but not in the pejorative sense) to about 17. However, it's tempting.

As I have probably said before (Lord knows I've said it often enough in my head), distraction is my middle name. When my professional life, my love life, my financial life is going well, that's when I need something upon which to fixate. A goal, something over which I have sole control. Something that no one and nothing can take from me.

My friend from university, now a successful financial consultant, does exactly the same as me regarding food and eating. Why do we, educated women with strong analytical minds, fuss and fret and fury over something as seemingly futile as food?

Is it, I often wonder, to remind ourselves that in a world of equal opportunity and where everyone exists primarily for themselves, we are still women?
